Vigils held for victims of London Bridge attack

Boris Johnson

Lukasz Koczocik, 38, who lives in southeast London and is originally from Poland, ripped a 5ft-long ceremonial lance from the walls of Fishmongers' Hall when Khan launched his horrifying stabbing rampage on Friday (November 29).

Sharif said he last spoke to Khan in March.

"I feel, as everybody does, a huge amount of sympathy for the loss of Jack Merritt's family, and indeed for all the relatives of Jack and Saskia, who perished at London Bridge", he said. "I am now coming to terms with the whole traumatic incident and would like the space to do this in privacy, with the support of my family", he said.

"Saskia was attacked inside Fishmongers' Hall and pronounced deceased at the location at 1425", he said.

Khan joined the Learning Together programme towards the end of his sentence and attended the event at Fishmonger's Hall to take part in group workshops, the court heard. "I would like to send my best wishes to them and everyone effected by this sad and pointless attack", he added.

"Yet under the law, when he was sentenced, there was no means of reviewing his release - he was just sprung automatically.' Mr Johnson, who later joined home secretary Priti Patel on an election trip to Southampton, added it was a 'profound question" as to whether some terrorists could ever be rehabilitated.

Jack Merritt was killed in the London Bridge terror attack on November 29.

Since his subsequent release in December 2018, Khan had been living in Stafford and was required to wear a Global Positioning System police tag.

The victims' families have paid tribute to their loved ones.

Khan, 28, was arrested in December 2010 and sentenced in 2012 to indeterminate detention for "public protection" with a minimum jail term of eight years after pleading guilty to preparing terrorist acts.

Leanne O'Brien, the girlfriend of victim Jack Merritt, described him as a "phenomenal" man on Monday.

"He [Jack] would be seething at his death, and his life, being used to perpetuate an agenda of hate that he gave his everything fighting against", Merritt wrote in an opinion piece published by The Guardian.

Miss Jones, from Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, was a volunteer for the programme which aims to bring offenders and people in higher education to study alongside each other.

Boris Johnson has sought to blame Labour for the release of Khan, promising a tougher stance on the release of prisoners if his Conservative party win a majority.

Armed with two knives and dressed in a fake vest, he was approached by members of the public, including former delinquents at the conference, before being shot by police.

Mr Johnson denied claims he was politicising the attack, saying he had campaigned against early release for some time, having previously raised the issue during his 2012 campaign to be mayor of London.
