Two children dead, one missing after being trapped in flooded Arizona creek

GCSO: 3 children missing after flooding in Tonto Basin area

Dodd said two adults and two children were rescued Friday. "In this case, this awful and tragic incident ... that's what happens when you ignore these types of signs".

A woman who was in the water also got out, but three children were unaccounted for, the undersheriff said.

Two of the three missing children in Arizona were found dead on Saturday after their vehicle got stuck in a flooded creek the day before.

"We hope we accumulate the final one and bring her to safety", Dodd said.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office said Saturday four other children and two adults who were in the vehicle swept away in Tonto Creek have been rescued from a small island and the bank of the creek in Tonto National Park northeast of Phoenix.

It was not immediately known why the group tried to cross the creek.

A vehicle was crossing Tonto Creek, about 60 miles west of the New Mexico border, when it was caught in flooding around 4 p.m. local time, Gila County Undersheriff Mike Johnson said. "We want to take her home safely with her family", said Lt. Virgil Dodd of the Gila County Sheriff's Office. Dodd, of the sheriff's office, confirmed Sunday that the number of people rescued Friday night was six after conflicting reports on Saturday. It was unclear where the 5-year-old girl's body was found.

Wintry weather affected Thanksgiving weekend travellers across the United States on Saturday as the powerful and risky storm moved eastward bringing heavy snow from parts of California to the northern Midwest and inundating several areas with rain.

The heavy snow forced sections of Interstates 17 and 40 to close Thursday into early Friday in northern Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The interstate reopened midday Friday.

One weather-related death was reported in South Dakota.
