Trump mischaracterizes Ukrainian president's comments from new interview

Ukraine President Denies Quid Pro Quo With Donald Trump

Zelensky in an interview in October said that he did not know that military assistance was suspended, while he talked with trump in July.

"Look, I never talked to the president from the position of a quid pro quo". That's not my thing.

"As for the United States, I do not want us to act like beggars".

Trump mischaracterized Zelensky's remarks, applauding them in a Monday morning tweet as an exoneration and declaring that his Ukrainian counterpart had "just again announced that President Trump has done nothing wrong with respect to Ukraine and our interactions or calls".

But a rough transcript of a July 25 telephone call shows that Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate whether Biden, while US vice president, pressed Ukraine to fire Ukraine's top prosecutor to stop a probe of Burisma, a gas company which Biden's son Hunter had worked for as a director. The important thing difficulty is whether or not Trump arrange a "quid professional quo" - Latin for searching for one motion in alternate for an additional - with Zelensky by holding again promised USA navy assist for Ukraine till the Bidens had been investigated.

"I would never want Ukraine to be a piece on the map, on the chess board of big global players, so that someone could toss us around, use us as cover, as part of some bargain", he said. At a United Nations meeting with President Trump in NYC of this year, Zelensky told reporters "Nobody pushed me" to investigate the Bidens.

Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., pressed Hale on the latter point, because it is a key argument made by President Donald Trump and his supporters to explain why the administration withheld military aid amid the president's requests the country investigate its part in the US election. "If you're our strategic partner, then you can't go blocking anything for us". Trump has offered an inconsistent series of defenses as to why he froze the roughly $400 million in security assistance, fluctuating between alleged concerns over corruption to misleading claims that European countries haven't done much to support Ukraine. Democrats have also claimed the "quid pro quo" could be present with the military aid being held for a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in the White House. It's about fairness for me.

13,000 Ukrainians were killed as a result of the conflict, with seven per cent of Ukraine under occupation by Russian Federation in February according to Zelensky's predecessor, Petro Poroshenko. It's not about a quid pro quo. They do. All branches of government were corrupted over many years, and we are working to clean that up.

I was all set to explain, once again, that Zelensky's assessments of Trump's misdeeds aren't altogether relevant to the impeachment inquiry. "It just goes without saying", he added.
