State Police: cruiser struck by Tesla 3 in "autopilot" mode

Tesla Autopilot Connecticut Crash

The Connecticut State Police said in a press release that two troopers dispatched to Interstate 95 in Norwalk to help a disabled vehicle that was stuck in the center lane.

A Tesla in autopilot mode collided with a CT state police cruiser early Saturday morning as the trooper was assisting a disabled motor vehicle in the center lane of Interstate 95.

Tesla has said repeatedly that the semi-autonomous system is created to assist drivers, who must pay attention and be ready to intervene at all times.

After being stopped by the police, the driver claimed that the Tesla was operating with the Autopilot convenience function enabled.

The driver of the Tesla told police that he put the auto on Autopilot because he was checking on his dog in the backseat, according to a statement from Connecticut State Police.

The Tesla struck one cruiser and the disabled vehicle, State Police said, and the driver said he was using the car's autopilot system while he checked on his dog.

Whilst waiting for the broken-down vehicle to be recovered, the Tesla Model 3 struck one of the police cruisers, along with the vehicle the police were attending to.

"The driver behind the wheel, Tesla has continued to slowly head North, until he was stopped by a second police officer appeared on the scene 100 feet away from her",- later told the police.

They maintain that both police cruisers had their emergency lights activated and an additional flare pattern behind the vehicles.

He was issued a misdemeanor summons for Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment.

Tara Andringa, executive director of Partners for Automated Vehicle Education, said most vehicles available for sale today offer driver assistance features, but even the "most advanced of these aids, the driver must always monitor and be prepared to control the vehicle".

State police cited the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and said that while certain vehicles have some automated capabilities, there are none yet that are fully automated or self-driving.
