Recipients of the 42nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors pose for a group

A singer and left-leaning activist used her award acceptance speech to criticize the president's top foreign policy adviser on December 7.

According to Sam Greisman, a movie writer and the youngest son of Sally Field, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was having a major sad at the State Department dinner for Kennedy Center honorees.

"Before I came to 'Sesame Street, ' I didn't feel like what I was doing was very important", Spinney said when he announced his retirement in 2018.

Later, in the evening Ronstadt rose from her chair to deliver the zinger. She is known to be a critic of President Trump.

"I'd like to say to Mr. Pompeo, who wonders when he'll be loved, it's when he stops enabling Donald Trump", the 73-year-old said, according to Variety and CNN.

The report said that the audience gasped as Ronstadt took her seat. Ronstadt, who gets around in a wheelchair due to Parkinson's disease, made the statement a few feet away from the host's table in front of about 200 people.

Neither Trump nor the first lady attended this dinner and previous dinners since several honorees threatened to boycott the event if the president attended back in 2017.

His "Sesame Street" pals Abby Cadabby and Elmo were perched on each of his shoulders as they sat proudly alongside fellow honorees including actress Sally Field, singer Linda Ronstadt, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and R&B veterans Earth, Wind and Fire.

Tom Hanks, as the entered the building, pointed out that this annual tension seems unique to the Trump administration.
