Scientists derive 'monster' black hole so mountainous it must no longer exist

According to Liu Jifeng, a National Astronomical Observatory of China professor who led the research, "Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution".

After finding the star, which they named LB-1, the researchers used two huge optical telescopes - the Gran Telescopio Canarias in La Palma, Spain, and the Keck I telescope in Hawaii - to determine the mass of the star and its black hole companion. This is because when the stars explode and die, they lose a lot of their mass which is swept away by the winds.

"This discovery forces us to re-examine our models of how stellar-mass black holes form", Reitze added.

The LB-1 black hole shouldn't be confused with the supermassive black holes, which are much bigger - probably billions times the mass of our sun.

Jifeng's researchers zeroed in on LB-1 with China's Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, which looks for the "one out of a thousand stars" orbiting an invisible object's gravitational pull. They're so elusive that scientists occupy handiest stumbled on, known, and measured about two dozen stellar black holes, the press release said.

The black hole, which is the subject of a new research paper published in Nature, left the research team scratching their heads.
