Revolutionary new prostate cancer test can be used at home

'Prostate Cancer UK and Movember are glad to declare that people have granted financing to the group at the University of East Anglia to test this in an a lot bigger gathering of men'. It normally develops slowly and the vast majority of cancers won't require remedy in a person's lifetime.

Active surveillance monitors early prostate cancer that has not spread, according to Prostate Cancer UK.

An at-home urine test could "revolutionise" how prostate cancer is diagnosed, scientists have said.

The urine test was created by experts from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Medics can now struggle to identify patients with an aggressive form of prostate cancer who need immediate treatment from those who are low risk and put on active surveillance.

'These patients go on to a functioning reconnaissance program following the determination which may include rehash biopsies and MRI checks which is very meddlesome.

But first, a test to pick out who will respond best is needed, so that doctors know which patients to give it to.

Independent academics were wary the latest findings, published in BioTechniques, were "overstated".

Dr Mangesh Thorat, delegate chief of the Cancer Prevention Trials Unit at King's College London, stated: 'They found that "at-home" examples are at any rate comparable to tests in the center.

"These biomarkers, although promising and an area of active research, are not yet recommended for screening or during management of prostate cancer by active surveillance".

'Therefore, these findings do not now have any clinical or public health implications. "Should any of these biomarkers become a standard screening or reconnaissance apparatus in future, this new "at-home" technique will be helpful".

The urine test may one day replace rectal examinations for diagnosis. But it is unreliable.

It is used for men suspected of having cancer and can work out which men have aggressive or intermediate levels of the disease, as well as ruling out those who do not have prostate cancer.

Simon Grieveson, head of research funding at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "This new test is early in its development, but has the potential to offer a simple, non-invasive way of predicting aggressive prostate cancer without the need for men to attend a clinic".

Around 48,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the United Kingdom, and more than 11,000 die from it. The causes of prostate cancer remain unclear, but age, obesity and a lack of exercise are known risks.

Sex hormone androgen is the main driver of prostate cancer, so hormone therapy to suppress his or its receptor, the so-called chemical castration is the standard frontline therapy. Improving rates of diagnosis and treatments also mean more people are living for longer with the disease.

In the United States, 174,650 men are expected to be diagnosed by the end of the year, according to the American Cancer Society.

How quickly does it develop?

"For the reason that PUR take a look at correctly predicts competitive prostate most cancers and predicts whether or not sufferers would require remedy as much as 5 years previous than same old medical strategies - it implies that a destructive take a look at may just allow males to simply be retested each two to 3 years, relieving rigidity to the affected person and lowering clinic workload", added Clark.
