Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 is Next Year's Big Processor

Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 865, the chip in the middle in the image above, is "the world's most advanced 5G platform", promising "unmatched connectivity", according to VentureBeat. We'll get more details about the hardware tomorrow, but there's a few things today that have been disclosed and are worth covering.

Qualcomm has also revealed that its new chip will bring better photography to devices with it helping to shoot 8K quality. The poster also makes it clear that the smartphone will be 5G-ready.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 also includes FastConnect 6800 connectivity for Wi-Fi 6. Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile at Qualcomm, also said the Snapdragon 865's ISP can capture 4K video at 64 fps, with each frame displayed at very high resolution. Qualcomm has designed these chips to be "global" and support as much of the current and future 5G infrastructure as possible.

The Snapdragon 765 with Snapdragon X52 Modem-RF is created to offer peak downloads of 3.7 Gbps with upload speeds of 1.6 Gbps to rival many wired connections.

The modules are meant to reduce the amount of time it takes phone brands to design a new device because Qualcomm will have already performed much of the engineering work and testing.

The new chipset by Qualcomm will have a new Snapdragon X55 modem, but more specs should follow soon.

Qualcomm hasn't announced the design details - it's spending the first day of its Snapdragon Summit talking about how it will position its next-gen chips.

As for gaming, the Snapdragon 765 will support some of Qualcomm's Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, which include hardware and software optimizations aimed at mobile gamers. The Snapdragon 865 still adopts eight CPU cores (one large, three middle, and four small cores).

The unveiling of the two new mobile platforms took place during the company's Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii. Xiaomi says it will feature the Snapdragon in its Mi 10 smartphone in early 2020, and fellow Chinese phone maker Oppo plans to use the Snapdragon 855 in an upcoming flagship, too.

With 2019 nearly over, we don't have any significant smartphone announcements left, as most vendors release new products in time for the busy holiday shopping season that starts in early November, several weeks ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
