Qualcomm's new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is 17x larger, offers two-finger authentication

2020 iPhone Rumored to Have Under-Display Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner Supplied by Qualcomm

The larger sensor also means setting up fingerprint authentication will be easier, as you won't have to repeatedly tap your finger from different points to register a fingerprint on your phone.

In brief: Part of Qualcomm's hardware announcements underpinning most 2020 smartphones, is the company's new and improved ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, appropriately called the 3D Sonic Max, since it has a scanning area that's 17 times larger than the company's first-generation 3D Sonic sensor.

Qualcomm has launched 3D Sonic Max to overcome the issues faced by the first generation sonic sensor that debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S10. The new dual-fingerprint authentication system will introduce a new layer of security that could practically be used by banking apps, for example.

Apple has arranged for a representative to meet with Taiwanese touchscreen manufacturer GIS next week to discuss development of an iPhone with an under-display fingerprint scanner for release as early as next year, according to a pair ofreports from the Economic Daily News.

The bigger sensor area also makes it more secure since the scanner is able to get a complete picture of one's fingerprint.

The reports claim that Apple plans to use Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology in at least one iPhone model set to be released in 2020, although the timeframe could be pushed back to 2021.

Another feature that Qualcomm is bringing with its new fingerprint sensor is that it can authenticate two fingerprints at the same time owing to its large surface area.
