Putin, Xi launch 'historic' Russia-China gas pipeline

Stressing that he and Putin agreed to continue putting bilateral ties as a priority of each other's foreign relations and enhancing strategic coordination and cooperation, Xi called on both countries to redouble their efforts to initiate more key projects like the east-route natural gas pipeline, to boost both countries' development and better benefit both peoples.

Russian Federation and China on Monday launched a giant gas pipeline linking the countries for the first time, one of three major projects aimed at cementing Moscow's role as the world's top gas exporter.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has a video call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, as the two heads of state jointly witness the launching ceremony of the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 2, 2019.

Russian Federation and China signed a 30-year, $400 billion deal to build and operate the pipeline in 2014, after a decade of hard talks. Russian Federation also ships 200,000 bpd to China via a pipeline crossing Kazakhstan. Construction began later that same year.

BEIJING (AP) - China and Russian Federation launched on Monday a gas pipeline that is more than 6,000 kilometers (3,750 miles) long, an outcome of their long-planned energy partnership.

Russian Federation began sending natural gas to China's northeast on Monday, launching a new pipeline. With the pipeline's operation, the city now has access to a stable supply of clean energy.

"Heihe has registered 30,000 households for switching to natural gas for heating", Xinhua reports. It will take one year to complete full coverage of the gas network in the city, according to the company.

China is to import 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2020, ramping up to 38 billion cubic meters annually starting in 2024.

"China's gas demand growth is expected to slow down from previous years yet remains strong, with an estimated 10% year-on-year growth for the first nine months of 2019", Jean-Baptiste Dubreuil, from the International Energy Agency's natural gas market analysis team, told Reuters.

Despite repeated objections from the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress, Russia is building the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline through the Baltic Sea - a project that would allow Russia to sharply increase its gas exports to Germany, with a maximum annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters.

"This will effectively optimize the country's energy consumption structure, mitigate air pollution along the route and keep our skies blue", Sun said.

The Power of Siberia pipeline is a "project of symbolic importance for China-Russia cooperation", said Xi, who expressed hope that the pipeline will become a driving force for economic and social development in the regions it traverses.
