Philippines lashed with strong winds, heavy rains as Typhoon Kammuri nears

Philippine authorities evacuated tens of thousands of people, cancelled more flights and shut schools as Typhoon Kammuri came closer to land in the main Luzon island.

CAAP said airports in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, central and southern Mindanao regions, have already prepared by boarding up facilities, reinforcing structures, charging generators, and restocking batteries and needed emergency supplies.

It is then forecast to pass close to Manila, which is home to 13million people and is the site for numerous SEA Games events.

Possible Storm Surge height in surge prone areas: more than 3 meters over Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur; up to 3 meters over Quezon, Camarines Norte, Albay, Quezon, and Sorsogon.

The Philippines evacuated 200,000 people in coastal and mountainous areas due to fears of flooding and landslides and said it would also shut its main global airport as a powerful typhoon was set to make landfall on Monday night.

The 20th storm to enter the Philippines this year is following a track similar to typhoon Rammasun in July 2014, which killed 106 people in the south-east Asian country and damaged properties worth 38.6 billion pesos (S$1.03 billion).

The country's deadliest cyclone on record was Super Typhoon Haiyan, which left more than 7,300 people dead or missing in 2013. It has suspended canoeing and windsurfing competitions scheduled for December 3. Organisers are due to deliver an update on the impact later on Monday. Organisers have said contingency plans are in place should the event face disruption.

This year's Games in Clark, Manila and Subic are already particularly complex, with a record 56 sports across dozens of venues that are in some cases hours apart by vehicle.

Around 8,750 athletes and team officials are expected at this year's 30th edition - the biggest ever - and there are some 12,000 volunteers.

In an eclectic programme, Olympic sports like swimming and athletics sit side-by-side with regional favourites such as martial arts pencak silat, arnis and wushu, and this year athletes will even battle an obstacle race course in Manila.
