Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to have surgery for Lisfranc injury

Panthers Fire Coach Rivera

Fowler went on to emphasize that the Panthers would never trade Newton within the division, so the Saints would only be a possibility if the quarterback were to be released.

Newton revealed in September that he sustained the injury in the Panthers' first preseason game and hid the severity of it from his coaching staff.

According to CBS Sports Senior Writer Jonathan Jones, Newton was still undecided on surgery as recently as last week, when he had a doctor's appointment and was still attempting to clarify the extent and type of operation needed. Eventually, he was placed on injured reserve.

After meeting with his players a final time, Rivera came into the media room at Bank of America Stadium and began with a prepared statement that ran almost five minutes.

Rivera has stood in front of the media and been a team spokesman for the franchise through good times and bad - through arrests and accolades, controversial signings and Coach of the Year awards, gut-wrenching losses and electrifying wins.

Teams often look to the opposite of their previous coach when making a new hire, so the prospect of replacing Rivera with an offensive-minded coach isn't a surprising one on multiple fronts.

The Panthers announced the move 12 games into the 2019 season. Rivera said. "That's the biggest gratification to me". "Our problems didn't start until when?"

"So at the end of the day, hopefully the young man is going to be healthy and it'll be a good sign for this team".

Rivera also mentioned that he knows what Newton is capable of, "We saw a year ago until the Pittsburgh game what a healthy Cam can do".

He also implied that the new head coach would have a say in Newton's future.

"In the modern National Football League, I think there is a preference for offensive coordinators". They know what I like and what I don't like.

Newton, 30, has one year left on his contract.

"So many fond memories", he said. "Charlotte is a place I know people know me".
