Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris has suspended her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Mehlenbacher, who landed with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 2020 campaign, said the final straw came when dozens of aides at Harris' Baltimore headquarters were laid off.
But reports emerged of unhappiness among her staff amid her inability to settle on a campaign message and achieve a breakthrough in the polls.
But Harris struggled to reorient articulate a distinct reason for her candidacy, and the campaign attempted to reroute midway through the year for a last-ditch effort to win over Iowa, a state she had initially placed little emphasis on in her primary strategy.
Her decision to exit the race comes after months of trying to regain the momentum from her January campaign launch, which drew 20,000 people in her home state of California.
She told supporters in an email Tuesday that she "simply doesn't have the financial resources we need to continue". By the fall, she had returned to her courtroom roots with the refrain that "justice is on the ballot", both a cry for economic and social justice as well as her call that she could "prosecute the case" against a "criminal" president. It was those same skills her team tried to highlight as the House impeachment inquiry into President Trump got underway.
