Jay-Z marks 50th birthday by adding his music on to Spotify

Spotify announced on Wednesday that Jay-Z's entire catalogue has returned to the music streaming service.

In a Twitter announcement Wednesday, Spotify wished the rapper a happy birthday and welcomed him back to the streaming service. The return to the service comes as the rapper is celebrating his 50th birthday. Tidal has struggled to compete with the two titans of music streaming, and the move to put Carter's music back on Spotify is the latest sign that the competition remains challenging. He originally removed his songs from both Apple Music and Spotify in April 2017, although they were nearly immediately reinstated on the former.

When music streaming started picking up steam in the middle of the decade, Jay-Z didn't want to be left behind. He previously removed most of his catalogue when he launched Tidal, with the exception of his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt, 1997's In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2...


Spotify hadn't been able to get back the rights to play Jay-Z's songs on behalf of the artist.

Fans can now stream 4:44 on Spotify for the first time, along with classics like The Blueprint, American Gangster and Watch The Throne.
