Hundreds of flights cancelled across the United States after winter storms
Millions of travelers heading back from their Thanksgiving holiday could be caught up in a fast-moving winter storm making its way east from California to the Midwest and beyond.
Farther south, precipitation was in the form of rain and thunderstorms.
The NWS predicted snowfall of 6 to 12 inches for much of New York's lower Hudson Valley, interior northeast New Jersey, and interior southern CT from Sunday morning.
"You could face messy conditions on Sunday, so exercise caution and give yourself lots of extra travel time", NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell said on Saturday.
New York City will start out with freezing rain, sleet and a little snow before changing over just rain later Sunday, said Marc Chenard, a senior branch forecaster at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.
Schools closed preemptively as rain was expected to turn into snow in the region's first significant storm of the season, a nor'easter so named because the winds typically come from the northeast.
As tired travelers make their post-Thanksgiving trek back home - and back to work - two winter storms continue to disrupt travel plans throughout the nation. Another system is forecast to develop in the mid-Atlantic on Sunday, moving into a nor'easter by Monday.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday, 80 flights were delayed and 7 were cancelled at the three New York City-area airports, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.
The Federal Aviation Administration said some flights heading to Newark are being delayed by an average of more than 2 1/2 hours.

In Denver, 100 flights were cancelled last Saturday because of high winds.
State police had responded to more than 550 storm-related crashes across NY by 7pm.
High winds and ice were making travel nearly impossible in some other places, however. Major interstates in Colorado were also reopened.
That was added to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow that fell before Thanksgiving.
Major highways have reopened in Wyoming and Colorado, a day after snow and high winds caused blizzard conditions and clogged roads with snow drifts.
All roads in and out of Casper were closed Saturday morning, including the entire 300-mile stretch (483-kilometer) of Interstate 25 in Wyoming.
