H&M trials renting clothes option in a bid to tackle environmental concerns

An H&M store in Stockholm Sweden

H&M is expanding their fashion efforts by giving their customer's the opportunity to rent and return merchandise.

H&M's clothing rental service, which is by far only active at its store in the Swedish capital - Stockholm, now includes just 50 garments, which will be offered to the brand's loyalty program members.

As of yesterday, consumers could rent garments for 350 kronor (US$36.65) a week in a refurbished flagship store on Sergels Torg in central Stockholm. After this three month testing period, H&M will assess all aspects of the program and decide if the model can be welcomed globally. Besides its rental service, the clothing giant will also have a trial run of a clothing fix service.

H&M joins other popular retailers in the rental game including Nuuly, which is offered by the parent company of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People and Banana Republic, which launched a service called Style Passport.

The clothing industry has come under increasing scrutiny as it is responsible for as much as 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it consumes more energy than aviation and shipping combined, according to United Nations data.

The move followed a similar decision by the maker of Vans and Timberland shoes.

1000's of fires tearing by the Amazon spawned a global disaster for Brazil, with protests, traders and world leaders voicing concern that the federal government of Jair Bolsonaro is doing too little to guard the world's largest tropical rainforest.

H&M said its temporary ban on leather from Brazil will remain in place 'until there are credible assurances. that the leather does not contribute to environmental harm in the Amazon'.

'Because of the extreme fires within the Brazilian a part of the Amazon rainforest, and the connections to cattle manufacturing, now we have determined to position a brief ban on leather-based from Brazil, ' H&M mentioned in an emailed assertion.
