Fisherman helps free bald eagle wrapped in octopus' tentacles

The salmon farmers were on the water near Quatsino, BC, at the northwest tip of Vancouver Island on Monday when they heard "a lot of splashing and a screeching sound", John Ilett tells the Victoria Times Colonist.

Fish farm workers in Canada intervened when they came across a bald eagle locked in a battle for survival with an octopus.

A group of fishermen in Canada rescued a bald eagle from the grip of a large octopus that had dragged the bird underwater and was trying to drown it, a report said.

An octopus caught a bald eagle in a death grip. The farmers reportedly made a decision to intervene when it became clear that the bird was going to drown if they didn't help.

"I was able to just latch on to the octopus and give it a little tug", he told CNN.

"We weren't sure exactly how it was going to go down when I tested the pole", he added.

Illett, whose been working as a fisherman for 20 years, said the scene was among the most incredible things he's seen while at sea. The video has garnered plenty of attention on social media.

"Am I at fault because I'm human and I felt compassion for the bird?" he said. Under the MBTA, anyone harming one could face up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
