Fields, Hurts, Young join Burrow as Heisman finalists

The victor will be announced Saturday at the college football awards show. He transferred to Oklahoma after spending his first three college seasons at Alabama, attempting to follow in the footsteps of Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018).

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young were named finalists for the 2019 Heisman Trophy on Monday.

Since the Heisman Trophy began inviting finalists to New York City in 1981, Oklahoma is the first school to have a quarterback invited to the ceremony in four straight years, and the first to have different quarterbacks invited in three straight years. No school has ever had three straight winners.

Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State: How the votes are divided among Ohio State players is going to be fascinating, as all three Buckeyes (including running back J.K. Dobbins) are deserving of praise for their play this season.

It makes four straight years Oklahoma has had a Heisman Trophy finalist, and the fifth straight year the Sooners have had a player finish in the top five in the balloting. He had a breakout season this year in the Tigers' new spread offense.

Fields played his freshman season past year at Georgia, but transferred to Ohio State and was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA to play this season.

Hurts threw for 3,634 yards and 32 touchdowns with just seven interceptions this season.

A defensive player has not won the award since Charles Woodson in 1997, and it is rare for one to even be invited as a finalist.

Young, despite a two-game suspension for an NCAA violation, recorded six forced fumbles and 16.5 sacks, breaking OSU's single-season record.

Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor has been one of the most prolific runners in college football history, surpassing 1,900 yards rushing in each of his three seasons.

He's third in the nation in passing efficiency and total yards per game.
