Facebook Will Let Users Transfer Pictures Directly to Google Photos

Facebook has launched a tool that will enable members to transfer photos and videos they have uploaded to the platform to Google Photos.

"The photo transfer tool can be accessed in the Your Facebook Information section of the app's settings".

The service would initially roll out in Ireland and then, in 2020, across the world, Facebook said.

The Data Transfer Project is open standard for arranging data in a common format so users could easily move their information from one platform to another.

It is already possible for people to download all of the data Facebook holds on them as a single archive file.

USA and European regulators have been examining Facebook's control of personal data such as images as they look into whether the tech giant's dominance is stifling competition and limiting choice for consumers.

"We want to build practical portability solutions people can trust and use effectively", said Mr Sattterfield.

"It's important that Facebook and other companies allow you to move data about", said ORG director Jim Killock.

All data transferred will be encrypted and people will be asked to enter their password before a transfer begins. It's a new system created to allow seamless data transfer across all the popular online platforms.

"That's why we're developing new products that take into account the feedback we've received and will help drive data portability policies forward by giving people and experts a tool to assess".

The tool is now being rolled out in Ireland, but will be made available worldwide in early 2020, the company said today in a blog post.

'That new importer can also be contributed back to the open source project, thereby allowing other companies to export to that new service, as well, with no additional technical work'.
