End of Thanksgiving Weekend Could Bring 2 Feet of Snow to Region

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service said the storm was expected to drop 6 to 12 inches (15-30 centimetres) of snow from the northern Plains states into Minnesota, Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

In addition to hazardous traveling conditions, the ice and accumulating snow could bring down trees and wires, causing power outages, officials said.

More than a foot (0.3 meters) of snow is expected in parts of upstate NY eastward to southern Maine.

The system, which has been pummeling the USA since before Thanksgiving, has already dumped heavy snow from parts of California to the northern Midwest and inundating other areas with rain.

Four children have died, a six-year-old girl is missing and travellers are stranded after wild winter weather smashed the United States. A storm-related death also was reported in South Dakota.

Blizzard conditions early on Saturday were already buffeting the High Plains. Snow should redevelop after midnight on Monday, falling moderate at times, and gradually taper off between 6 p.m. Monday and midnight Tuesday, Hudson Valley Weather predicts.

The waivers that airlines, including American, are issuing give travelers who have booked flights on specific dates heading to and from certain cities the option to change or cancel their flights for no fee during the storms.

But much of the Harrisburg region was receiving only rain, with the heaviest rain expected to fall around 11 a.m., according to National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Dangelo.

Monday's forecast isn't shaping up as well as Sunday's forecast did, unfortunately.


Millions of travelers are stressing out as powerful storms rolling over the East Coast interrupt or delay their return home from the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

On Sunday evening, almost 6,500 flights were delayed within, into or out of the United States and more than 800 had been canceled, according to FlightAware.com.

Some planes inbound to Newar, New Jersey were delayed by an average of two-and-a-half hours, with 33 flights cancelled.

There were also dozens of delays at airports in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Strong winds, heavy rain and strong thunderstorm are impacting some areas, as well, making travel extremely risky through the holiday weekend. The entire state will flip from rain to snow, but there ill be flip-flopping between a wintry mix and snow on and off throughout the afternoon.

He also deployed state agency commissioners from DHSES, DOT, Thruway Authority and State Police to regions expected to be hardest hit by the storm, and announced the state emergency response bunker will be open until the end of the storm.

NWS said that traveling during the storm could become "impossible" due to the snow and ice expected. Several other roads and highways also were closed.
