Cowboys cut placekicker Brett Maher, sign Kai Forbath

Brett Maher

But because of an injury, he'd never play for the Cowboys as that was the same year Oklahoma State's Dan Bailey would arrive in Big D.

Maher surprisingly replaced long-time kicker Dan Bailey past year as the Cowboys primary kicker after hitting an impressive 57-yard field goal attempt during the team's final preseason game.

The team has released kicker Brett Maher and signed on Kai Forbath to take his place Monday, according to a report by the Cowboys.

The Cowboys had Forbath on their roster during the off-season in 2012, cutting him that spring before he joined NFC East rival Washington and led the National Football League at 94% by making 17 of 18 kicks as a rookie that year. He has covered the Texas Rangers since 2014 and started reporting on the Dallas Cowboys in 2016.

Maher was already one of the NFL's least accurate kickers before Week 13 but has been especially bad during these last two Cowboys losses. It's the second time in a week the team had looked at potential alternatives on the free agent market.

This season, Maher struggled, specifically from between 40-49 yards, where he was just one of five including a missed 42-yarder against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

With Bailey now booting kicks for the Vikings, Forbath will replace the guy who replaced Bailey, having himself spent two years in Minnesota.

All he had to do is prove he's better than Maher, along with Rose and Vizcaino, and the job was his.

Forbath has kicked in one game this season, for the New England Patriots. That tanks his value as a long-field weapon and marries those concerns to existing ones regarding his short field accuracy. That's more than any other kicker in each of the past four seasons.
