Chris Petersen resigns at Washington; former Boise State assistant replaces him

Petersen arrived at Washington before the 2014 season and guided the Huskies to a pair of Pac-12 titles and a berth in the College Football Playoff in 2016.

Chris Petersen's resignation is shocking for the UW Huskies. "This wouldn't be possible without the mentorship of Coach Petersen and I would like to thank him for everything he has done for me, as well as Jen Cohen for entrusting me with this opportunity".

Lake is among the best defensive coordinators in college football and had drawn head coaching interest before.

Defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake will replace Petersen following bowl season. He also spent time with Petersen at Boise State from 2006-11.

Petersen left Boise State after his worst season, an 8-4 regular season in 2013, and indicated he was eager for a new challenge at Washington.

Even after a disappointing season in Seattle, there was nothing to indicate that Petersen would be on his way out of the program. Petersen will coach the Huskies within the bowl sport, his closing sport accountable for this system he helped develop again into nationwide prominence. When Don James walked away as Huskies coach in 1993, it was because the coach felt hung out to dry by the athletic director and university leaders. The Huskies are 7-5 in a season when they were expected to contend for the Pac-12 title. Petersen will coach through the Huskies' bowl game before transitioning "into a leadership advisory role for Husky Athletics", according to the media release.

"I'll be a Husky for life, but now is the right time for me to step away from my head coaching duties and recharge", Petersen said in a press release. Jimmy is a great teacher of the game and his track record of developing young men both on and off the field speaks for itself.

Washington will be the 42-year-old Lake's first head coaching opportunity. "I can't thank him sufficient for his service and management, and I look ahead to having him keep on workers in a management advisory position, so he can proceed to affect people throughout our division and the complete campus". After starting at Eastern Washington as a graduate assistant, he became the defensive backs coach at Washington in 2004. Alexander says it was clear that Lake knew football and was a great teacher but as an NFL player, he was more focused on just trying to do his job. He was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2016 and has served as the Huskies' lone defensive coordinator in the last two seasons.

Fans also stormed the basketball court at Auburn Arena after an upset of Kentucky in 2016.

Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Snow, Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning and Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley are the other finalists announced Monday.
