China Bans All US Diplomats From Entering Muslim Xinjiang

Beijing has threatened to publish such a list of companies since May after the US placed restrictions on Huawei Technologies Co

The revised bill still has to be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate before being sent to Trump.

Risk-off is the current theme and headlines such as this can fuel a bid in the yen.

The bill, which the House could vote on as early as Tuesday evening, would require the USA president to condemn abuses against Muslims and call for the closure of mass detention camps in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would force the Trump administration to take a tougher stance on Beijing over the mass detention of Uighurs in the Chinese province of Xinjiang.

It calls for sanctions against senior Chinese officials who it says are responsible and specifically names the Xinjiang Communist party secretary, Chen Quanguo, who as a politburo member is in the upper echelons of China's leadership.

That legislation, along with a bill that bans the export of crowd control devices to Hong Kong police seeking to stem pro-democracy protests, led China to threaten sanctions on some human rights organizations and halt USA naval visits to the city.

The law is the latest anti-China legislation to pass in the US Congress, following recent bills supporting protesters in Hong Kong, which Trump signed after a veto-proof majority of member approved the measures. "China will respond accordingly to the development of the situation".

Hu, who did not cite where his information came from, said that China was also considering imposing visa restrictions on United States officials and lawmakers for their "odious performance on Xinjiang issue".

The foreign ministry, in a statement attributed to spokeswoman Hua Chunying, said Xinjiang is China's internal affair and urged the U.S. to correct its mistakes and stop the bill from becoming law.

The legislation adds to tensions between the two superpowers just as they are locked in negotiations to finalize a "phase one" deal to resolve their protracted trade war.

After initially denying their existence, Beijing now defends the camps, which it calls "vocational education centers", as a necessary measure to counter religious extremism and terrorism.

"We can not be silent".

"We must say "never again" to the cultural genocide and the atrocities suffered by Uighurs and others in China".

"Today the human dignity and human rights of the Uighur community are under threat from Beijing's barbarous actions, which are an outrage to the collective conscience of the world", she said shortly before the vote. "We must demand an end to these barbaric practices", Smith said, adding that Chinese officials must be held accountable for crimes against humanity".

"I'm not sure it's the Xinjiang issue being more sensitive than Hong Kong, I think there's a sort of piling on factor here that the Chinese are concerned about", Johnson said.

The president would be required to impose visa and financial restrictions under the Global Magnitsky Act on the listed individuals.

The Uighur Act of 2019 condemns Beijing's "gross human rights violations" linked to the crackdown in the western region of Xinjiang, where as many as one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim minorities are being held in re-education camps.

It would require the State Department to evaluate whether Chinese officials would meet the criteria for sanctions for their roles in the crackdown in the Xinjiang region.
