Australia's Copa America 2020 campaign to include clash with Lionel Messi's Argentina

"Hopefully not", the Argentina coach told reporters.

Argentina, who last won the Copa in 1993, will also face Uruguay, Paraguay, Australia and Bolivia in Group A after their opener against Chile. "The players are so excited to have this great opportunity".

The Socceroos' opening match will be against 15-time Copa America champions Uruguay and their star striker Luis Suarez on June 13.

Australia's only win against Argentina in a men's global came in 1988 when it famously triumphed 4-1 in Sydney, with Arnold featuring in the home side's line-up.

The 2020 Copa America marks the first time in the modern history of the tournament that the event is being co-hosted.

They were drawn in the South Zone and will kick off their campaign in Argentina, with the North Zone games being played in Colombia.

Next year, the tournament will instead see two first round groups of six teams. Argentina defeated Chile in the third place play-off at this year's tournament. Eight teams, or the top four from each group, make it through to the quarterfinals.

Chile scored back-to-back victories over Argentina in the finals of the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

Co-host Argentina will open the tournament on 12 June with a match-up against Chile in Buenos Aires as the pair reprise their recent rivalry. From that point on, single-elimination takes place.

The Copa America has also previously invited Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama and the United States to compete in the tournament with El Tri finishing as runners up twice.
