At least 14 killed in Burkina Faso church attack

Street Scene in Burkina Faso

Fourteen people died and several were injured in a "barbaric attack" on a protestant church in Burkina Faso's east, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said late on Sunday.

"This attack unfortunately left 14 dead and many wounded", it said.

The identity of the gunmen was not immediately clear and further details had yet to emerge.

"Unidentified gunmen carried out an attack during a Sunday service at a Protestant church in the town of Hantoukoura near the border with Niger", the statement said.

Soldiers are hunting for the attackers who fled on motor scooters after gunning down worshipers during a Sunday mass.

Islamic extremists have been active in Burkina Faso since 2015.

An ambush on a convoy transporting employees of a Canadian mining company in eastern Burkina Faso earlier this month killed 37 people, the deadliest attack in almost five years of jihadist violence.

The conflict spread across the border from neighbouring Mali where Islamist militants took over the north of the country in 2012 before French troops pushed them out.

According to local sources, the attack happened in the village of Foutouri in the east of the country, which is notorious for crime and the activities of suspected jihadist groups with links to al Qaeda* and Daesh*.
