Apple buys UK-based startup ‘Spectral Edge’ to enhance iPhone photography

In court filings, Apple corporate lawyer Peter Denwood has been named a director of Spectral Edge, with other advisors and board members now terminated.

'We also can support bokeh processing by eliminating artifacts that are common in these images'.

It's fair to say that, for many consumers, camera performance is the number one deciding factor when it comes to choosing a new smartphone. The higher-end 6.1-inch iPhone and 6.7-inch iPhone will have a triple camera setup and will most likely replace the iPhone 11 Pro series.

Right now there is no real solution for white balancing across the whole image [on smartphones] - so you'll get areas of the image with excessive blues or yellows, perhaps, because the balance is out - but our tech allows this to be solved elegantly and with great results.

The news was first revealed by Bloomberg, which obtained secret documents 'that Apple now controls Spectral'. Apple has not yet commented on the deal, though the company typically opts not to specifically confirm such acquisitions.

The Spectral Edge patents stem from academic research at the University of East Anglia, and consist of machine-learning algorithms that can be embedded both on-chip, and on the software side of things, for enhancing images in real time. Spectral Edge combines regular camera data with an infrared view of the same scene, relying on the fact that the IR camera can pick up more detail in low-light or foggy scenes.

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that Apple may launch four 5G-enabled iPhones next year and while 5G-related components could raise the production costs of the devices, he believes that the iPhone maker will not significantly increase the price of 5G iPhones.

It's not just iPhones, mind. A night mode system developed by the startup promises to maintain image quality and natural skin tones, while still being easier on the eyes.
