Amazon pulls 'disturbing' Christmas ornaments bearing images of Auschwitz

A Christmas ornament featuring Auschwitz is for sale on Amazon

Amazon has ignited public outrage after selling Christmas ornaments decorated with pictures of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was first set up by the Nazis after they occupied Poland during the Second World War.

The Christmas merchandise featured images from Auschwitz including the railway line leading to its infamous gates, the barbed wire fences and the buildings where it housed victims - mainly Jews. "Auschwitz on a bottle opener is rather disturbing and disrespectful", the message said. Some users called the ornaments "despicable" while others threatened to cancel their Amazon accounts.

The museum's post brought the items to the attention of others on social media who condemned Amazon.

It seems that @amazon has removed all of the "Christmas ornaments" with the images of the former Auschwitz camp.

After another wave of angry responses, the memorial confirmed those products were later removed as well.

An Amazon spokeswoman confirmed that the products were not on display any more.

The products were taken off the website hours after the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum on Sunday morning in Europe asked the site to remove the items.

According to the retailer's offensive and controversial materials policy, products related to human tragedies are not allowed to be sold on the site.

"Thank you to those who reacted, reported and put pressure here", it said.

The museum then discovered more Auschwitz-themed items on the site from a different seller, tweeting "sadly it's not over".
