Amazon launches its first-ever portable Echo smart speaker in India

Amazon releases its first portable smart speaker in years, but you can't have it in the US yet

Amazon is launching a brand-new Echo speaker today. Its designed specifically for India, though it will expand to other markets eventually.

The newly launched smart speaker packs itself with a 4,800 mAh battery and promises to provide a backup time of around 10 hours. This lets you move it around the house, even to places where there isnt a convenient power plug.

Amazon's Echo ecosystem is expanding at a rapid pace and the company wants to put its smart assistant, Alexa, into everything from cars to household appliances. That number only goes up to 11 hours when the gadget is in standby mode, so Amazon recommends keeping it plugged in (or at least switched off) when you aren't actively using it.

Portable Echo for your home - Smart speaker that comes with a fabric design and 360 degree sound. It has built-in microphones so that it can listen to commands, but lacked a speaker of its own.

The company said the Echo Input Portable Smart Speaker Edition (which remains a mouthful) shares the same "hardware architecture" as the Echo Input, a device it launched past year that does not feature a speaker.

The first of a kind, Echo Input, will enable users to carry their speakers anywhere in their home. It also comes with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to use it as a Bluetooth speaker by connecting your smartphone. The Echo Input Portable natively supports Amazon Prime Music and Apple Music plus JioSaavn, Gaana and other local services – you just need to connect it to your home Wi-Fi and ask it to play your favorite artist. Users can also take advantage of the vast repertoire of Alexa skills to carry out more specific tasks like ordering food, paying bills or booking a cab on the speaker.

You can pre-order one now at INR 5,000 – a 17% discount off the usual price of INR 6,000.

Priced at the affordable equivalent of around $85, the fairly intriguing device is scheduled to start shipping on December 18 in India, now fetching just 70 bucks or so (Rs. 4,999) when taking a pre-order discount into consideration. So, if you want Alexa with you in the living room to field queries about the actors you're watching on screen, or change the smart lighting in the room to match the mood - then you can carry the chatty box with you.
