$120K banana art taken down from Art Basel after 'uncontrollable crowd' situation

Hunger Games Artist Eats Banana from $120,000 Installation at Art BaselCC0

Fresh bananas, stuck with duct tape near the door of the plane, welcomed the passengers while boarding in Miami, but we are told that the funky fruit took off from all the jets before the wheels rose. We don't know if they, like the artist, are making a statement or are they really hoping to raise a bid to earn some money off convenience store food. It was a basic, store-bought, banana and the only exceptional thing about it was that the fruit was taped to a wall.

Performance artist David Datuna ripped the duct-taped banana directly off the wall in Art Basel and proceeded to eat it in front of stunned observers. "It's very delicious", Datuna posted on Instagram.

This made access to the other exhibits near impossible, as well as put the safety of museum-goers and other artworks adorning the hall at risk of harm or damage.

After Italian sculptor Maurizio Cattelan's banana artwork taped to a wall in the Perrotin at Art Basel gallery sold for $120,000, it was eaten on Saturday by David Datuna, a performance artist, who shared his feat on social media.

The banana has prompted both weighty and lighthearted debate about what constitutes art and what it is worth.

The banana was purchased from a local grocery store, and two more such bananas were sold for $175,000.

Following all of this attention, a page dedicated exclusively to the taped fruit popped up on IG, created and managed by the global Perrotin Gallery. Now, the banana has even its Instagram account named "Catellan Banana".

The page already has over 8,000 followers.

Roderick Webber, 46, was arrested Sunday on costs of felony mischief at Artwork Basel after live-streaming himself scrawling the conspiracy-theory message in purple lipstick, based on the Miami Herald.

A spokesperson for Art Basel directed questions to authorities.
