Woman rescues koala from bushfire in New South Wales

An obsessive-compulsive dog who was abandoned as a puppy has a new mission: helping find and save koalas injured in Australia's recent devastating bushfires. The marsupial was spotted crossing a road among the flames near Long Flat in New South Wales.

In the video, which has been widely shared across social media, Doherty can be seen running through smoke to chase the confused koala, which reportedly ran straight into flames alongside Oxley Highway.

Doherty ran into the woods from her auto and immediately wrapped the koala in the shirt off her back.

"He is probably 50-50 at this stage", a spokesperson for Port Macquarie Koala Hospital said.

On Wednesday, Doherty reunited with Lewis in the hospital.

"He has been treated and is now in the five-star accommodation at the Koala Hospital". "No other word for it".

The current bushfire crisis has mostly been contained to the east coast of NSW and Queensland states, but officials in South Australia warned on Tuesday that forecast near-record temperatures raises the risks in that state. At least 577 homes have been destroyed in the region amid this wildfire season, made worse by an unusually warm and dry winter.
