What other Senate candidates said about Sessions joining race

Trump has said naming Sessions as attorney general was the "biggest mistake" of his presidency, and he has called his leadership of the Justice Department "a total joke".

He resigned from his post in the Senate in 2017 to become Mr Trump's first attorney general.

"We'll file our papers tomorrow", Sessions told Carlson on "Tucker Carlson Tonight". I was there to serve his agenda, not mine.

But Sessions did not leave on good terms.

Sen. Doug Jones, who holds the seat Sessions hopes to reclaim, said, "Since Jeff is not running against me at this point, it would seem that folks need to be focused on the reactions of his opponents in the Republican primary and perhaps President Trump's tweets about him over the last couple of years".

When rumors picked up that Sessions may run for his old seat, Trump expressed unhappiness at the prospect and mused about campaigning against his former friend, the people said. The Senate hopeful replied, "I hope so". "The senior advisors told me that this is what the rules require, the regulations required, and I read them, and I don't think there was any doubt from me. I was there for the Trump agenda every day I was in the Senate".

Multiple high-profile Republicans already have announced bids to unseat Sen.

The seat is now held by Democrat Doug Jones, who defeated an unpopular Republican candidate in a special election in December 2017.

Other candidates have included Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, businessman Stanley Adair and state Rep. Arnold Mooney.

Sessions was the first US senator to endorse Trump in the 2016 election cycle. Howell Heflin retired in 1997 following almost two decades in office. He has hired Curt Anderson of On Message to be his campaign consultant.

Sessions, who was the first senator to endorse Trump's campaign, suffered a huge falling out with the president over his decision to recuse himself from the federal probe into Russia's involvement in the 2016 election. Trump is scheduled to visit Alabama this weekend to attend the Alabama-LSU game college football game on Saturday.

Other Republican candidates are already pitching themselves as better stewards of Trump's political brand.

Byrne slammed Sessions, claiming he "ran away" instead of defending the president during the Russian Federation investigation and impeachment inquiry. Have I said a cross word about the president? "Before he runs again and asks for the voters' support, he owes the voters of Alabama a full explanation of what happened between him and the president", Brown said.
