'We are working on agreement now with the Taliban'

PM Imran Trump discuss Afghan peace process Kashmir over phone

In this May 3, 2019, photo, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani speaks on the last day of the Afghan Loya Jirga meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan.

A press communique issued by the Prime Minister's office revealed that the Premier had a telephonic conversation with the US President, who thanked Pakistan for its efforts in securing the western hostages.

The United States and the Taliban had been talking in a bid to put an end to the Afghan conflict for nearly a year before Trump called off the talks in September.

Ghani's chief spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, said the USA and Afghan leaders "had a detailed discussion about the peace process and the important progress Afghan security forces have made on the battlefield".

What Happened: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani accepted U.S. President Donald Trump's invitation to the White House during a phone call, Afghan presidential spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi confirmed via Twitter on November 22.

Prospects for peace in Afghanistan seem distant despite the recent release of three key Taliban members in exchange for two Kabul-based American University of Afghanistan professors.

President Trump thanked the Prime Minister for Pakistan's efforts in facilitating this outcome.

This interview follows the past week's prisoner exchange of three Haqqani network commanders imprisoned in Afghanistan for two Western professors held by the Taliban.

Recalling their conversations in Washington and NY, the two leaders agreed to deepen bilateral collaboration, including at relevant multilateral fora. The Afghan leader has been left out of nine rounds of secret talks in Qatar between Taliban representatives and Trump's peace envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad.

India constructed Afghanistan's new parliament building and has also wooed Afghans with its soft power, including Bollywood films.

The two leaders further agreed to remain in close contact, according to PM Office. Time and again he has asked Trump to mediate in the matter but India has reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is the internal matter of the nation. Despite India's rejection, President Trump has repeated his offer on several occasions.
