Thomas Partey recovers from scoring own goal

Thomas Partey put the ball into his own net as Atletico Madrid lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena in Group D of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

A weird Thomas Partey own goal gave Leverkusen the lead on 41 minutes at the BayArena before Germany worldwide Kevin Volland bagged a second shortly after the break.

Bayer Leverkusen continually looked risky from corners and nearly scored a third goal from one in the 77th minute, but the ball didn't fully cross the line. Alvaro Morata pulled one back after three minutes of injury time and was only denied an equalizer by a fine save from Lukas Hradecky in the last play of the game.

Atletico Madrid came out highly motivated but still the goals were scored at the other end of the pitch as Karim Bellarabi's square pass into the box found Volland, who made no mistake to tap home on 55 minutes.

Despite suffering a late fright and red card, Leverkusen were worthy winners and must have left their supporters wondering why they could not have produced similar displays earlier in the group.

"The chance is small, but it is still there", said Bosz defiantly on Tuesday.

Leverkusen's efforts paid off moments later when Thomas cleared Charles Aranguiz' cross into the wrong goal to make it 1-0 in the 41st minute.

With two games remaining, Italian champion Juventus tops the group with 10 points, three ahead of Atletico, which is followed by Leverkusen and Lokomotiv - both with three points.

Amiri was sent off late for a bad challenge on Santiago Arias but Leverkusen managed to hold on.
