Pelicans vs. Trail Blazers Recap: The Good, the Bad and the Ball

Carmelo Anthony #00 of the Portland Trail Blazers reacts after scoring on a three-point basket during a National Basketball Association game against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center on November 19, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Yet the first look at Anthony's fit in Portland only confirmed the suspicion that his staying power will be determined not by the buckets he scores, but by how many he concedes.

Just after joining the Trail Blazers, Anthony was in the starting lineup as it was reported he was scheduled to play about 20 minutes or so in his first game. In Portland's very first possession, Anthony, who received a warm welcome from the Smoothie King Center crowd, tried to post up Pelicans forward Kenrich Williams.

When Ball eventually returns from the adductor strain that has kept him out of the last six games, Gentry will have to decide whether or not it's worth jeopardizing the chemistry and, most importantly, the success the new-look first unit has looked in Ball's absence.

Make no mistake, Portland can use Anthony's offensive flashes, which came in the form of multiple three-pointers and a nice drive through traffic Tuesday.

Anthony responded with a solid level of play.

"It felt great to be back in the flow of the game, be back on the court, be back to where I think I belong at", Anthony said after the game, according to ESPN.

He also added four rebounds and a block but committed five turnovers. New Orleans won, 115-104. He airballed a turnaround jumper in the first quarter, had a highlight-reel driving dunk attempt emphatically blocked by Kenrich Williams and lost his man a couple of times on defense. Holiday then came sprinting down court, took a handoff from Nicolo Melli near the 3-point line and exploded toward the rim for a layup.
