NCAA to target Memphis with 'major infractions case' for playing James Wiseman

James Wiseman

According to Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated, sources familiar with NCAA enforcement procedures said that Memphis is likely to face a "major infractions case" for playing Wiseman despite repeated warnings from the NCAA about eligibility issues. He also must donate $11,500 to a charity of his choice.

"Based on case precedent, the circumstances of this case and other mitigating factors, the University will immediately appeal this decision", Memphis said.

"Late this afternoon, the NCAA informed the University of Memphis that men's basketball student-athlete James Wiseman must be withheld from 12 games of competition, stemming from a NCAA violation several years ago". "We expect a more fair and equitable resolution, and we will exhaust all avenues on James' behalf". At the time, Hardaway was not the coach of Memphis. In three games this season for Memphis, Wiseman is averaging 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds.

Once Wiseman withdrew his lawsuit, Memphis held him out of a win over Alcorn State while working to resolve his eligibility status with the NCAA. Wiseman also will miss a trio of games against Southeastern Conference teams: Mississippi, Dec. 14; at No. 20 Tennessee; Georgia, Jan. 4. Ole Miss on Saturday, North Carolina State on November 28, Tennessee on December 14, Georgia on January 4 and Wichita State on January 9, plus the Tigers' AAC opener vs. Tulane on December 30.

Though Wiseman appears to be in the clear, the Memphis athletic department might not be.

With Wiseman able to return for the second half of the season - and even more importantly March Madness - he'll be able to put more work on tape that could solidify his spot as the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

WREG previously reported that Tigers' head coach Penny Hardaway gave $11,500 to Wiseman's family to move from Nashville to Memphis while Wiseman was in high school.

The NCAA forbids boosters from offering financial assistance to any players.
