UK to mark Remembrance Day

An equerry laid a wreath for the Duke of Edinburgh, who was not present after retiring from royal duties two years ago. She was joined by the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge.

The royal family have led solemn tributes to the nation's war dead at the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in central London.

On another balcony, Countess Sophie, the Duchess of Sussex and Princess Anne's husband, Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence watched on.

The Cenotaph Remembrance Sunday is commemorating the United Kingdom fallen heroes of war.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and other politicians paused campaigning for Britain's December 12 election to join the ceremony on a cold, sunny morning.

Boris Johnson, Jo Swinson, Jeremy Corbyn and Ian Blackford also laid wreaths.

At 12pmCET, two minutes of silence were observed nationwide.


"I will be proud to lay my first wreath at the Cenotaph as Prime Minister".

All three services played traditional music for the service, including the Last Post, played by Buglers of the Royal Marines.

For the first time, the Ambassador of Nepal placed a wreath in honour of the contribution Gurkha regiments have made to Britain's military campaigns for the past 200 years.

Kimberley Durrant, the director of the governments London office, took part in the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in the United Kingdom capital.

A host of military and foreign representatives also laid wreaths by the Cenotaph, while other Cabinet ministers and religious leaders were in attendance.

The annual Royal British Legion Veterans' Parade followed the service, in which thousands of veterans from the Second World War or more recent conflicts marched past the Cenotaph. The armistice ending the First World War between the Allies and Germany was signed at Compiegne, France on eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - 11am on the 11th November 1918.
