Cyclone Bulbul Intensifies Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, to Make Landfall on Sunday

The cyclone is likely to intensify further and move northwards till early morning of November 9

Winds of up to 110kph and heavy rainfall from the fringe of Bulbul have already lashed Odisha state, uprooting trees that blocked many roads.

Operations at the Kolkata airport, the busiest in eastern India, will be suspended for 12 hours beginning 6 pm on Saturday due to severe cyclone Bulbul, Home Ministry officials said. "Orange Warning" has been issued for 9 and 10 November for districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur where heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to be expected at isolated places.

Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis and Indians were evacuated to shelters as the region prepared for cyclone Bulbul to hit its shores.

IndiGo airline on Saturday said it has implemented proactive cancellations and made alternate arrangements for its passengers in order to deal with severe cyclonic storm Bulbul, which is likely to make landfall between West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts by this evening. "Thereafter, it is very likely to re-curve northeastwards and expected to move cross West Bengal - Bangladesh Coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara", it added.

"Deputy Inspector General S R Dash, who is Commander of Coast Guard, West Bengal, said three disaster management teams have been stationed at Haldia and two at Fraserganj in 24 Parganas district for timely action".

The Bengal government said 1.58 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas.

"We have put 15 of the state's 30 districts on alert in view of the possible heavy rain", PTI quoted Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) and Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, PK Jena as saying.

The met department also advised West Bengal government to suspend ferry boat service on November 9 and 10 in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore districts.

They have also asked the tourists in the coastal areas of Digha, Mandarmoni, Talsari, Shankarpur, Bakkhali and Sagardweep not to take part in sea related activities.

At the time of landfall, the storm is expected to weaken into a Severe Cyclonic Storm due to its interaction with dry air, higher vertical wind shear and close proximity to coastal proximity.

She said Contai, Ramnagar and Khejuri were among the most affected areas in the storm.

It said the south-western Khulna region could be the worst hit.

The cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal can last from April to December.
