Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick against Lithuania takes him to 98 worldwide goals

Ronaldo was denied the chance to score a first-half hat-trick by referee Ruddy Buquet, who initially pointed to the spot following a challenge on Ricardo Pereira, only to overturn his decision following a brief discussion with one of his assistants.

Ronaldo, who yet again proved his worth at global level, was at the forefront of Portugal's 6-0 thrashing of Lithuania in a 2020 European Championship qualifier on Thursday night.

Pizzi, Goncalo Paciencia and Bernardo Silva were also on target alongside Ronaldo's dazzling trio of strikes.

The reigning European champions remain second in Group B, a point better off than Serbia - 3-2 winners over Luxembourg - ahead of the final round of qualifying fixtures.

If Ronaldo makes it to 100 goals, he'll become only the second player in football history to register a century of worldwide goals for his country, joining Iran's Ali Daei.

Portugal's Gonçalo Paciencia celebrates after scoring a goal to Lithuania during the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier soccer match at Algarve Stadium in Faro, Portugal, 14 November 2019.

The victory puts Portugal one win away from qualification for the Euro 2020 finals, with victory in Luxembourg on Sunday punching their ticket to the tournament.

"I knew he (Ronaldo) was able to play", Portugal coach Fernando Santos told Portuguese TV channel RTP. "Nothing surprises me about Cristiano".

The Portugal captain scored an early penalty before curling in a second.

He had another shot on the turn saved by Setkus and blasted over after bursting into the box before the break.

Pizzi scored in the 52nd, Paciencia added to the lead in the 56th and Silva got on the board in the 63rd.
