UCLA vs. Stanford, 10/15/19 Week 8 Predictions & Preview

Chip Kelly

UCLA's 123rd ranked scoring defense (37.7 PPG entering last night) also stopped the Cardinal from doing pretty much anything they desired.

Kelly didn't announce a starting quarterback for this game with Dorian Thompson-Robinson working his way back from an ankle injury suffered September 28 against Arizona. The only other ranked opponent the Bruins have faced is No. 5 Oklahoma, which crushed UCLA 48-14.

"Winning last week was very big for our confidence and building momentum", linebacker Gabe Reid said of the 23-13 win over Washington on October 5.

Coach David Shaw has ruled out starter K.J. Costello, who will miss his third consecutive game (and fourth overall) because of a thumb injury.

Sophomore Jack West is expected to get his first collegiate start, as a result. Scarlett rushed a career-high 33 times for 151 yards and a touchdown in the win over Washington and has 702 all-purpose yards to lead the Cardinal, which is averaging almost 35 minutes in time of possession, fourth-best in the country. RB Cameron Scarlett had a busy game on the ground for the Cardinal as he contributed 151 yards and a TD on 33 carries.

The Bruins are 5-16-1 against the spread in their last 22 games against the Cardinal and 1-5 ATS in the last six at Stanford. The rushing attack has ended up getting an aggregate of 124.8 yards a game on the year.

The No. 10 rushing offense in college football was unable to reach the end zone last week, as the Ragin' Cajun's Elijah Mitchell, Raymond Calais and Trey Ragas combined for 139 yards on 29 carries.

Being down your starting quarterback is never ideal but Stanford will have to lean on their defense more than usual.

Louisiana-Lafayette should have an easier time against the 3-3 Arkansas State Red Wolves, who surrender the second-most yards per game (539.6) in the nation. He has thrown for 47 1yards and two touchdowns.

The Bruins are 5-2 with the under in their last seven road games, but 4-1 with the over in their last five conference games. The reason this game isn't listed as Stanford minus two scores is the injury situation for the Cardinal coming out of the win over Washington. He is a pivotal part of this Bruins offense with over 1,200 yards passing in just four games and looks to continue the momentum that UCLA had before he sustained a leg injury.

South Alabama is 125th on offense, with 275.2 total yards on average, and opposing offenses are putting up an average of 427.6 total yards on its defense. The Cardinal are 4-0 over their last four weekday games and 18-6-2 ATS over their last 26 against teams with a losing record.
