Toronto Wolfpack offer Sonny Bill Williams biggest deal in Super League history

Sonny Bill Williams

More than half of the All Blacks World Cup squad have Maori or Pasifika descent, while virtually all of the All Blacks' current coaching setup is Pakeha (European).

According to a report, Williams has ben tabled a record $9 million deal to return to rugby league with the Toronto Wolfpack in the English Super League.

"It was a tough night, but there were some lessons", said the 34-year-old, who has also won a pair of titles in Australia's National Rugby League and a WBA worldwide heavyweight boxing crown.

It comes after Toronto's head coach Brian McDermott revealed earlier this month that his team had received word that Williams was interested in joining the team.

Since leaving in 2015, Williams has gone on to win his second Rugby World Cup with the All Blacks.

"We are in discussions but nothing is finalised or confirmed", Toronto chairman Bob Hunter told PA news agency on Tuesday.

Sonny Bill Williams will play his first Rugby Championship test of the season against the Pumas.

McDermott is hoping to sign at least four new players after winning promotion to Super League for 2020, including a high-profile name he believes could do for rugby league what David Beckham did for Major League Soccer.

"But he would have to be a very good player as well, he's got to be able to do the job that I want him to do".

Williams, meanwhile, called for a candidate with Pacific island or Maori blood to be considered for the All Blacks coaching set-up.

The Wolfpack are funded by Australian mining billionaire David Argyle, who has previously spoken about snaring Williams.

Blues assistant Tana Umaga and successful Japan coach Jamie Joseph are two such figures, while Blues head coach Leon MacDonald has played for the New Zealand Māori, and Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has Tahitian and Samoan heritage.

"I'm just thinking how can we get a lot more out of those boys and I know that there's a bit of space here for that growth".
