The Matrix 4 Adds Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To the Cast

Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the actor behind Black Manta in the DC superhero flick for Warner Bros., is deciding to take the red pill as he's now in talks for one of the lead roles in the sci-fi franchise's fourth installment, EW has learned.

The planned Matrix 4 found a Trinity of actors between Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and the sought-after new addition to the cast.

Lana Wachowski's The Matrix 4 is teeing up to bring the franchise back in a huge way.

Lana Wachowski, the co-creator, co-writer, and co-director of The Matrix trilogy, will return to direct the sequel. In the original 1999 film, Reeves plays the hero named Neo who is destined by a prophecy to free the human race after he awakes from his dream and joins up with a team of rebels to fight humanity's slavers.

In addition to his breakout role as Manta in Warner Bros.' "Aquaman", Abdul-Mateen portrayed Lupita Nyong'o's character's father in Jordan Peele's hit "Us" and had a starring role in an episode of "Black Mirror".

Abdul-Mateen II recently joined the cast of Aaron Sorkin's "The Trial of the Chicago 7" as Black Panther activist Bobby Seale.

Rumors have been speculating that a young Morpheus would be appearing in The Matrix 4, and the role was previously rumored to be a crucial part to the then uncertain sequel, with Michael B. Jordan being mentioned as a possible candidate.

Variety first reported the news of Abdul-Mateen II's casting.

Details about The Matrix 4 are being strongly kept under lock and key. Why is Lana Wachowski returning while Lily Wachowski is staying away?

Warner Bros. has not set a release date for this fourth Matrix film, but production is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
