Studio Ghibli films to hit streaming for the first time in 2020

And now we learn that, contrary to reports from just two days ago that Studio Ghibli films would never appear on any streaming service, HBO Max has acquired the Studio Ghibli streaming rights.

The impressive acquisition helps HBO Max to diversify its offerings as we head into the "Streaming Wars" era of television.

Under the oversee of animation directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki, the 30-year old studio has won countless global awards, including an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away, as well as four additional Oscar noms for Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There.

The HBO Max streaming service is set to debut in spring 2020, so we won't have to wait long until we'll finally be able to stream all of our fave Ghibli titles! . That means that in Spring 2020, Miyazaki fans can watch beloved films like "Spirited Away", "Kiki's Delivery Service", and "Ponyo".

Notable Studio Ghibli films absent from the announced list are the Grave of the Fireflies film, the Ronja, the Robber's Daughter animated series, and its many short films. Besides the Studio Ghibli films, the service will also offer programming libraries from HBO, Warner Bros., Turner, Crunchyroll, and more. "As a premium content brand, HBO Max is an ideal home for our films", said Koji Hoshino, Chairman of Studio Ghibli.

WarnerMedia struck a deal with Ghibli's American distributor GKids for the exclusive streaming rights.

Fans of Spirited Away and other films from Japan's legendary Studio Ghibli might be able to ditch that old DVD player soon.

If the ability to stream mindless hours of Friends or The Big Bang Theory or The West Wing wasn't enough to convince you to hand over your money to HBO Max, the streaming service's latest acquisition might do the trick.
