Squirrels' stash of winter walnuts causes car chaos

Chris Persic

Squirrelling away supplies for winter took on a whole new meaning for a couple in the United States, after they discovered a hoodful of walnuts and grass in their vehicle. He said walnuts were "everywhere" in his wife's Sorento including under the battery and near the radiator fan.

Chris Persic's wife called him Monday and told him her auto smelled like it was burning. "The walnuts on the engine block were black and smelled like they were definitely roasting".

Chris Persic shared a photo on Facebook of his wife's SUV stuffed with 200 walnuts under the hood.

"My truck may have had a squirrel chew through/pull out a fuel injector hose", he wrote.

They had noticed there weren't very many walnuts around the yard, given how big the tree is, but they said they didn't think they would find them under the hood of their auto.

Instead, she found over 200 walnuts and grass that took the Pittsburgh couple nearly an hour to dig out.

"Was absolutely nuts.no pun intended", Mr Persic said in his Facebook post.

He said: "My wife uses the vehicle for work, and it's only been sitting over the weekend". After the Sorento was brought into a fix shop, technicians removed some underbody panels and this caused countless walnuts to fall to the ground.

Chris Persic says his wife normally uses the vehicle for work, but during the weekend prior to the discovery, they used his truck instead.

"Fortunately, it wasn't all dry because they said it probably would have caught fire".

"Long story short, if you park outside, do yourself a favour and check under the hood every once in a while", he said.
