People rejected Abhijit Banerjee's Left-leaning ideology: Piyush Goyal

Piyush Goyal minister of Railways and Commerce Government of India at a press conference in Pune on Friday

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday slammed Union Railway and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for undermining the achievements of Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee, saying the economy is in a shambles while the government, instead of improving the economy, is busy "running a comedy circus".

Speaking to reporters, Goyal had said, "Abhijit Banerjee won the Nobel prize, I congratulate him. You all know that his thinking is totally Left-leaning".

"Congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee for the experimental approach to alleviate poverty and winning the Nobel Prize". Lekin unki samajh ke baare mein to aap sab jaante hain (You all know about his understanding). His thinking is completely left-leaning. People of India have totally rejected his thinking", said Goyal, and added, "I'm proud that an Indian has got the Nobel prize, but it's not necessary that I should agree with his ideas.

Banerjee, who helped the Congress draft the Nyuntam Aay Yojana or NYAY, a minimum income guarantee scheme which the party's major poll plank in the Lok Sabha elections, had said that as a professional he would have given the same number to the BJP if it had sought his opinion. "What a shameful thing for a Prime Minister to speak about coalition politics to save his government when he should have acted in the national interest and in the interest of the people".

Asked about Reserve Bank's Rs 1.76 lakh crore surplus transfer to the Central government, Goyal said that it was not the government which took the money. The money was lying with RBI without any goal (bebuniyaad). However, the Congress announced a more extensive and ambitious Rs 6,000 a month with an outlay of Rs 3.60 lakh crore. "I would say that they were willing to engage with the evidence and they implemented policies that followed with that experience", he further added. The reserves are disproportionately high to the bank's balance sheet.
