Global friendly match report Germany v Argentina

International Friendly Report: Germany v Argentina 09 October 2019

Germany threw away a two-goal lead against Argentina, with the nations playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Signal-Iduna-Park on Wednesday evening.

Six minutes later, Gnabry provided the assist for the 2-0 goal when he found Kai Havertz who rounded off a blistering counter-attack in style and scored his first global goal.

FC Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen earned a re-call to the Germany line-up while Freiburg duo Luca Waldschmidt and Robin Koch were handed their debuts.

After a slow start to the encounter, Argentina almost pulled one back against the run of play after 33 minutes when Rodrigo de Paul rattled the crossbar with a venomous strike from distance that left Ter Stegen flat-footed.

Germany made it 1-0 after 16 minutes through Serge Gnabry who was set up by Lukas Klostermann. While Ter Stegen was serious, Gnabry found something amusing.

Emre Can came close to extending Germany's lead early in the second half but Joachim Low's side were ultimately punished for taking their foot off the gas as Manuel Acuna's cross was brilliantly headed into the far corner by Alario midway through the second half.

Germany face stiff competition from Northern Ireland and Netherlands to qualify for Euro 2020 but looked confident and incisive enough to beat nearly anyone for an hour in Dortmund.

The best Germany teams of the last decade have always featured an imposing presence in attacking midfield, and Julian Brandt's high-pressing performance offered shades of Thomas Muller in his prime.
