Gabe Kapler out as Phillies manager after two seasons

The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Gabe Kapler on Thursday after two seasons with the club.

The Philadelphia Phillies have fired Kapler - who went 161-163 in two years - almost two weeks after a disappointing finish to a season of big expectations.

When looking at all of the high expectations surrounding this team entering the 2019 season after a successful offseason highlighted by the signing of Bryce Harper, it was embarrassing to watch Philadelphia finish fourth in the NL East, only ahead of the Miami Marlins.

Kapler was sacked by the Phillies after leading the club to a 81-81 record, leaving the City of Brotherly Love without October baseball for the eighth consecutive season despite an off-season headlined by the addition of Bryce Harper.

Phillies managing partner John Middleton said in a statement, "Several years ago, I promised our loyal fans that I would do everything in my power to bring a world championship team to our city". "I will never waver from that commitment".

A general view of Citizens Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Montreal Expos on April 18, 2004 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have decided that some changes are necessary to achieve our ultimate objective. Reassuring to me was the endorsement that people outside the Phillies gave to the progress we have made recently, both organizationally and on the field. We fell short of those, and that responsibility lies with me.

In his first game, the Braves rallied from a five-run deficit, winning on a three-run home run in the ninth inning.

The remainder of the Phillies' coaching staff has been invited to return next season.
