Two people were also seriously injured last New Year's Eve when a 25-year-old man went on a stabbing rampage near the city's Victoria railway station, reportedly shouting "Allah" during the attack.

Staff that work in the shopping centre have also been told it won't reopen today.

The police force said investigators "are keeping an open mind about the motivation of this awful incident and the circumstances as we know them".

Police are now appealing for footage and images of the incident on social media.

Greater Manchester Police are responding to multiple stabbings in the Arndale Centre.

David Allinson, Centre Director for Manchester Arndale, told the Manchester Evening News that there had been a serious incident.

Police in the city of Manchester said a man in his 40s who was originally detained on assault charges was arrested on a charge of "the commission, preparation and instigation of an act of terrorism".

A man stabbed and wounded five people in a mall in the northern English city of Manchester on Friday, in an incident that was being investigated by the United Kingdom counter-terror police.

The five people who were stabbed were taken to a hospital after the attack. Both their conditions are described as stable.

The shopping centre was evacuated as armed police rushed to the scene.

Greater Manchester Police said a man in his 40s was been arrested on suspicion of serious assault. A fourth woman, who was not stabbed, was treated by paramedics on the scene, and was deemed to not require hospital treatment.

"Soon after, security staff told all retail staff to close their doors and move the public to the back of the stores".

Houlder added: "Luckily she had quite a thick jacket".

"She said this guy was trying to stab random people", Houlder said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "shocked by the incident in Manchester and my thoughts are with the injured and all those affected". For the year from March 2018 to March 2019, the police registered more than 43,500 crimes with the use of knives and other piercing and cutting objects, which is 8% higher than the previous year.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and will face trial in November.
