Former US ambassador to Ukraine arrives for questioning in impeachment probe

Trump Impeachment Ukraine Ambassador

House Democrats have requested a deposition from Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, as part of their impeachment inquiry, but his interview has not yet been formally scheduled, multiple sources familiar with the issue told CNN. She is expected to face questions about her knowledge, if any, of the Ukraine episode.

Giuliani has maintained that he works for Trump pro-bono for some time now.

Yovanovitch was recalled from Kyiv in May as Giuliani - who is Trump's personal attorney and has no official role in the USA government - pushed Ukrainian officials to investigate baseless corruption allegations against Joe Biden and his son Hunter. He said the state department has control of those documents. Axios was first to report that Sondland would appear next week.

Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, will testify to the House under subpoena next week, according to his legal team.

On Monday, Fiona Hill, a former White House adviser who focused on Russian Federation, is expected to testify.

The statement also noted that Sondland will not release document Congress is requesting, however, and that it's up to the State Department to do so.

That prompted a subpoena by committees leading the probe in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives for Sondland to be deposed in closed session.

On Thursday, two foreign-born Florida businessmen who had helped Giuliani investigate Biden were arrested in what prosecutors said was a scheme to illegally funnel money to a pro-Trump election committee and other US political candidates. On Thursday, President Trump denied knowing Giuliani's arrested associates.

Yovanovitch, a respected 30-year career diplomat, was attacked by Giuliani and others who embraced an unproven, right wing conspiracy theory that the ambassador was part of a liberal scheme to bring down former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who pleaded guilty to fraud and lying to federal officials. The director of the Georgetown program, Barbara Bodine, said the former envoy is declining all requests for interviews.

Democrats have accused Trump of pressuring a vulnerable foreign ally in need of foreign aid money to dig up dirt on a domestic opponent for his own political benefit. He offered this one concrete example to the Daily Beast: "Speaking specifically about an August trip he made to Madrid to urge Andriy Yermak, a top Ukrainian official, to reinvestigate the Bidens, Giuliani said that he happened to be going to the Spanish capital already for "business and vacation'".

Yovanovitch became the target in March of allegations - vehemently denied by the State Department - that she gave a Ukrainian prosecutor a list of people not to prosecute.
