Essential's upcoming 'Project Gem' smartphone has a very unusual design

Essential reveals its next smartphone

If you're anxious that non-foldable smartphone design has gotten stale and familiar in recent years, you may find Essential's next Android handset to be right up your alley. Android co-founder, Essential CEO and recipient of a reported $90 million payout from Google after a misconduct investigation Andy Rubin posted pictures of a new device on Twitter that is taller and thinner than you're used to seeing, pointing out a "new UI for a radically different formfactor".

We don't know the official name of the phone but Essential is calling it "Project GEM".

Rubin unveiled the first Essential phone two years ago which sold poorly.

Rubin tweeted a short video and few images of Essential's upcoming phone. Essential's next phone can be seen in a unusual and unique look with tall ratio and narrow design. They look highly-reflective, and the colour hues appear to change depending on the angle (refer to video above).

Essential, the maker of Essential Phone, has also confirmed it's been working on a new device to "reframe your perspective on mobile".

The company has confirmed that the Essential phone is now under testing, which means we shouldn't be expecting a launch anytime soon.

XDA developer leaked some code snippets of Essential gem 2 specifications. It might also run Android with Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor.

Smartphone makers are realising they need to come up with new ways to excite buyers, and one of their strategies seems to be coming up with new form factors such as foldables, or in this case, insane tall phones. Rather than the tweets of Rubin and essential official account, no further information is given about Essential's next phone.
