Alaska's Fat Bear contest crowns Holly `Queen of Corpulence'

The “Queen of Corpulence” took the crown after 12 hours of voting that landed her with 17,500 votes

It might sound daft (and it is!) but there's a really good reason bears there have been putting on weight!

Alaska's Fat Bear Week officially ended Tuesday night with Katmai National Park & Reserve announcing the victor: Number 435, or "Holly" for short.

She is fat and fabulous. Long live the Queen of Corpulence!

Meet the most attractive, most voluptuous bear in Alaska.

Fat Bear Week for Alaska's grizzlies has become a national internet sensation, pitting individual bears against each other in an online voting contest.

Park rangers made a game out of the process - a March Madness-style bracket matching bear against bear, each with photos proving girth and inviting the public to vote on the fattest bear in each pair.

A total of twelve bears were in the running to be voted the victor and it was Holly who came out on top.

Last year's victor, Beadnose, was absent from the competition this year, though it is unclear why. The event gained a following in schools across the United States, after teachers incorporated Katmai´s fat bears into lesson plans. Holly looked lovely in her photos, showing off her robust frame that was a result of her salmon-rich diet.

'She´s just a great bear. "When she doesn't have cubs, she looks like the Michelin Man", said Naomi Boak who's been in charge of this year's Fat Bear Week event.

'She doesn´t stop fishing. "It was really hard to get pictures of her because she just doesn't get out of the water", she added.

From October 2 to 8, the park asked social media followers to vote on which husky hibernator is the fattest bear of the Brooks River.

This isn't the first time everyone's been talking about Holly though.

Holly was already famous for adopting a yearling cub that had been abandoned by its mother. "Bears are generally selfish creatures who are not known for displays of altruism", it says in her bio.

Although she had no cubs this year, Holly has offspring, including another adult female with cubs of her own.

The aim of Fat Bear Week is to highlight the Katmai bears' preparation for winter hibernation.

Holly takes the title from last year's victor, Beadnose, who Katmai National Park described as "one of the fattest females" before Holly took the title.
